Infantile pyloric stenosis.

چکیده
It would seem, from the studies of Carter and Powell (1954) and of McKeown, MacMahon and Record (1952), that both genetic and environmental factors play a part in the aetiology and development of infantile pyloric stenosis. The latter group of workers have stressed the importance of postnatal environmental influences. Their studies, based on data derived from more than 1,000 cases treated in the Children's Hospital, Birmingham, between 1940 and 1951, showed that symptoms, on average, developed later in babies born in hospital than in those delivered at home, and in first-born than in those born subsequently. In an earlier survey, based on 578 cases operated on between 1945 and 1950, they (McKeown et al., 1951c) had also found that the size of the tumour was roughly proportional to the age of the baby at operation. These observations, coupled with the rarity with which the tumour is found at birth, strongly suggested not only that the growth of the tumour was a post-natal phenomenon, but also that its rate of growth was conditioned by post-natal factors. The purpose of the present study was first to confirm, by direct measurement of the tumour at operation, that its size was indeed proportional to the age of the baby; secondly to enquire into possible post-natal influences determining its rate of development; and thirdly to attempt to evaluate the role of genetic factors.

Induction of pyloric hypertrophy by pentagastrin. An animal model for infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.
Administration of pentagastrin in depot form to 20 pregnant bitches produced pyloric hypertrophy in about 28% and gastroduodenal ulceration in about 16% of their pups. The two lesions were not necessarily found in the same individuals. Histological appearances of the pylorus in affected pups closely resembled those of human infantile pyloric stenosis.

Development of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis during postoperative period in EA with TEF is rare. Postoperative vomiting or feeding intolerance in EA is more common which is due to esophageal stricture, gastroesophageal reflux and esophageal dysmotility. A typical case of IHPS also presents with non-bilious projectile vomiting at around 3-4 weeks of life. The diagnosis of infantile hyp...
متن کاملRespiratory Depression Caused By Infantile Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis
Infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS) results in electrolyte disturbances due to persistent vomiting. Though the significance of hyperventilation in metabolic acidosis is established, debate continues regarding hypoventilation in metabolic alkalosis. We present six cases of respiratory depression requiring ICU admission in infants with hypochloremic, hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis due...
متن کاملInfantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in Greater Manchester.
An "unprecedented" rise in the incidence of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS) was reported from the Central Region of Scotland in 1979. Examination of statistics from Greater Manchester showed a similar trend in some district health authorities but not others. Possible explanations are examined but future research is required. Hospital Activity Analysis can provide a useful tool fo...

An association between blood group A and cancer of the stomach was first reported by Aird, Bentall, and Fraser Roberts (1953). Further associations between blood groups and gastrointestinal disorders have since been described (Clarke, 1964a). This paper reports an investigation into the ABO blood group distribution and salivary secretor status of patients with infantile hypertrophic pyloric ste...
متن کاملMore infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis?
In 1978 there was a disproportionate increase in the number of cases of Infantile Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis (IHPS) admitted to the Cambridge Military Hospital Aldershot. This increase has not been sustained in subsequent years, although the mean incidence for the period 1979/82 was slightly higher than the preceding years 1975/77. Analysis of the cases occurring in 1978 did not reveal any u...
